Welcome to Oaks Class – Years 5 & 6 🌳

Welcome to the Oaks Class blog! This page will keep you informed about learning, achievements, and important moments from our Year 5 and Year 6 classroom. Oaks Class is a focused, supportive, and ambitious learning community where pupils are encouraged to aim high, work independently, and prepare confidently for the next stage of their education.

Reading and Writing with Purpose 📚✍️

Reading plays a vital role in Oaks Class. Pupils engage with a wide range of high-quality texts through guided reading, class novels, and independent reading. They develop deeper comprehension skills, analysing language, themes, and author intent, while building a rich vocabulary.

In writing, pupils focus on crafting well-structured, engaging pieces across a range of genres, including narrative, persuasive, and informative texts. Emphasis is placed on sentence variety, accurate punctuation, and editing work carefully to achieve high standards.

Maths: Fluency, Reasoning and Challenge 🔢

Maths lessons in Oaks Class build fluency while placing a strong emphasis on reasoning and problem solving. Pupils deepen their understanding of number, fractions, decimals, percentages, and geometry, and are encouraged to explain their thinking using precise mathematical language. Challenge and resilience are key features of our maths learning.

A Broad and Enriching Curriculum 🌍🎨

Across the wider curriculum, Oaks Class enjoys exploring science through investigation and enquiry, developing historical understanding, and applying geographical skills. Creative subjects such as art, music, and design technology provide opportunities for self-expression, while PE supports teamwork, leadership, and healthy lifestyles.

Independence, Leadership and Preparation for the Future 🌱

Years 5 and 6 are important for developing independence, responsibility, and leadership. In Oaks Class, pupils are encouraged to manage their workload, collaborate effectively, and take pride in their achievements. Year 6 pupils, in particular, are supported in preparing for secondary school with confidence and resilience.

Working in Partnership 🤝

Thank you for your continued support at home. Regular reading, practising key maths skills, and discussing learning all have a positive impact. We value our strong partnership with families and look forward to sharing many more Oaks Class successes throughout the year.
